In response to widespread protests over soaring fuel prices, the Irish government has announced a substantial €220 million support package aimed at easing the burden on key sectors such as transport, agriculture, and fishing. This move follows weeks of nationwide demonstrations that brought major motorways and Dublin’s main street to a standstill.

How the Fuel Support Package Breaks Down

The newly announced support consists of two main schemes designed to assist those most affected by fuel price hikes. The Road Transporters Supports Scheme allocates €120 million to hauliers and bus and coach operators, while the Fuel Support Scheme dedicates €100 million to farmers, agricultural contractors, and fishers.

• Road Transporters Supports Scheme: Backdated to March, payments are based on the number of vehicles an operator licenses, with rates ranging from €1,350 per vehicle for operators with up to five vehicles to €300 for those with over 21 vehicles.
• Fuel Support Scheme: Targets users of green diesel, providing approximately 20 euro cents per litre or €200 per 1,000 litres, based on verified 2025 usage, covering March through July.

Beyond direct financial aid, the government has implemented excise duty cuts on petrol and diesel in recent months and delayed planned carbon tax increases. Additionally, a communications campaign is being launched to help households and businesses manage energy expenses more effectively.
