Microsoft has begun testing its Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) feature on the Xbox Ally X handheld, aiming to improve frame rates and visual fidelity during docked play on larger screens. Originally introduced on select PCs, Auto SR now targets the Xbox Ally X to enhance gaming experiences on TVs by upscaling lower-resolution frames.

This move is significant as it brings a DLSS-like technology directly integrated into Windows and Xbox hardware, allowing games without built-in upscaling options to benefit from smoother performance and sharper graphics. Gamers can now toggle Auto SR on or off via the Game Bar, with the feature especially beneficial for titles running below 60fps.

What is Auto SR and How Does It Work?

Auto SR functions similarly to Nvidia’s DLSS by rendering games at a lower resolution to increase frame rates, then upscaling the output to improve image quality. Unlike DLSS or AMD’s FSR, which require game integration, Auto SR is built into Windows and can apply super resolution to a wide range of DirectX 10 or later games without native support.

Microsoft leverages the Xbox Ally X’s NPU chip to perform upscaling without burdening the GPU, ensuring frame rates remain smooth while textures and details are enhanced.

Enhanced Docked Play Experience on Xbox Ally X

Auto SR is currently being previewed for docked mode, where the Xbox Ally X connects to a TV. This setup demands higher resolutions and can expose image quality drops or frame rate struggles in some games. Microsoft expects players to see the most benefit here, with Auto SR smoothing gameplay and sharpening visuals on larger displays.

  • Handheld display turns off automatically when docked to a TV
  • ROG Bulwark dock unlocks Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) for compatible TVs
  • New Game Bar display widget controls resolution, refresh rates, and project modes
  • Built-in dock controls disabled when an Xbox controller is paired
  • Gamepad Cursor option added for easier navigation in non-controller apps
  • Enhanced vibration feedback added for more immersive haptics

Seamless Game Library Management Across PC Storefronts

Microsoft is also improving how Xbox Ally devices handle games from multiple PC storefronts. Players can now add, remove, edit, and launch any installed game or app directly from the Xbox interface, regardless of the original launcher or store. This unified library approach simplifies game management and enhances the overall user experience.

Looking Ahead: What This Means for Xbox Ally Users

Auto SR’s rollout marks a major step in bringing advanced upscaling technology to handheld gaming, especially for docked play on the Xbox Ally X. As Microsoft continues refining the feature and expanding dock compatibility, players can expect smoother gameplay, better visuals, and more convenient controls in the near future.

“Docked play means larger screens and higher resolutions, where drops in image quality are more noticeable or where some games struggle to maintain smooth FPS. That’s exactly the problem Auto SR was designed to solve.”Microsoft
