Bitcoin’s price has surged approximately 15% over the past month, briefly climbing above $79,000 this weekend—the highest level since early February’s selloff. Currently trading near $77,000, the cryptocurrency’s recent rally has captured investor attention, though its sustainability remains uncertain.

This price boost coincides with a broader bullish trend in financial markets, including a nearly 9% gain in the S&P 500 during April. Bitcoin’s momentum has been further propelled by billionaire Michael Saylor’s firm, Strategy, which has aggressively acquired over 100,000 Bitcoin in recent months, surpassing BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF holdings.

Michael Saylor’s Strategy Fuels Bitcoin Rally

Strategy, led by Michael Saylor, has been a dominant force in Bitcoin accumulation, purchasing more than 100,000 BTC worth over $7.7 billion in March and April alone. This buying spree has helped push Bitcoin prices higher and positioned Strategy ahead of BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF in total holdings.

However, the pace of acquisitions slowed last week, with Strategy buying 3,273 Bitcoin for $255 million. This deceleration is linked to a dip in sales of the company’s perpetual preferred shares (STRC), which fund Bitcoin purchases through an 11.5% dividend. When STRC shares trade below their $100 par value, issuing new shares becomes more costly, limiting Strategy’s buying power.

Innovations in Dividend Payments Aim to Stabilize Purchases

In an effort to smooth out Bitcoin acquisitions, Strategy has proposed shifting dividend payments from monthly to twice per month. This change is designed to distribute Bitcoin purchases more evenly, potentially reducing market impact and volatility.

Macroeconomic Factors Cloud Bitcoin’s Path Forward

Despite the bullish momentum, Bitcoin’s advance faces headwinds from uncertain macroeconomic conditions. Rising energy prices, particularly oil, are dampening risk appetite among investors, which in turn affects growth assets like cryptocurrencies.

Energy prices are a complicating factor. With oil prices up, risk appetites may be lower, and that affects pricing on growth assets generally (crypto included). The market appears to be in a waiting phase. Prices haven’t moved decisively higher, and probably won’t until investors feel more comfortable with economic and macro events. Until then, a lot of capital is on the sidelines.Ashley Ebersole, Cofounder and Chief Legal Officer of tx

Market Sentiment and Future Outlook

Data from crypto analytics firm CoinGlass shows Bitcoin’s perpetual futures funding rate has been mostly negative over the past two weeks, signaling a growing number of traders betting against Bitcoin’s price. This cautious sentiment reflects broader uncertainty in the market.

Looking ahead, Bitcoin’s trajectory will likely depend on how macroeconomic factors evolve and whether major buyers like Strategy can maintain their acquisition momentum. Investors remain watchful, balancing optimism from recent gains with caution amid global economic shifts.
