Mali’s military chief, Gen Assimi Goïta, has appointed himself as the new defence minister after the previous minister, Sadio Camara, was killed in a suicide truck bombing during a recent wave of coordinated rebel attacks. This move comes as Mali grapples with a severe security crisis triggered by an alliance of jihadist and separatist groups launching nationwide offensives.

The attacks have exposed vulnerabilities within Mali’s military government, which seized power in 2020, and have raised questions about the country’s ability to contain insurgent forces. The government has responded by intensifying military cooperation with neighboring Niger and Burkina Faso, but large areas remain outside state control.

Military Cooperation and Regional Response

In response to the insurgent threat, Mali has partnered with Niger and Burkina Faso to conduct joint air strikes against jihadist and separatist forces. These three military-led governments have formed the Alliance of Sahel States, expelling French troops and relying on Russian paramilitary support to counter the insurgency.

“An investigation found that former and serving military personnel were complicit in planning and executing the attacks,” said the public prosecutor of a Bamako military court.Bamako Military Court Public Prosecutor
