Stranded Humpback Whale Rescued and Transported from German Waters to North Sea

A humpback whale that had been stranded in shallow waters off the German coast for over five weeks was successfully coaxed into a specially adapted barge and is now being transported to the North Sea. The rescue operation, funded by two German entrepreneurs, marks a significant effort to save the whale after previous attempts to guide it away from the coast failed.

This mission has captured national attention in Germany, symbolizing hope and determination in wildlife rescue efforts. However, experts remain cautious about the whale’s chances of survival, given its weakened condition and the unprecedented nature of the operation.

A High-Stakes Rescue Mission Captivates Germany

The whale had been stuck near the island of Poel for 29 days, after initially becoming stranded on Timmendorfer Beach in Lübeck Bay. Despite earlier efforts to free it, the animal remained in shallow waters, prompting a bold new approach involving a water-filled barge to transport it to deeper seas.

Till Backhaus, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s environment minister, has become the public face of the rescue, praising the operation as a shining example of what can be achieved in Germany. He expressed optimism that the whale would reach the North Sea within two days and noted the animal’s surprising vitality, including reports of it singing overnight.

The Journey Begins: From Baltic to North Sea

Once the whale was safely inside the barge, the transport ship Fortuna B began towing it through German waters into the Baltic Sea, then into Danish waters. The route will take the whale around the northern coast of Jutland and through the Skagerrak strait toward the North Sea, where it will be released.

The rescue team celebrated the milestone with visible emotion. Felix Bohnsack, the mission’s technical lead, praised the collaboration between government agencies and rescue organizations but cautioned that the whale’s survival was still uncertain.

Experts Voice Concerns Over Whale’s Future

Despite the rescue’s success, marine experts remain skeptical about the whale’s long-term survival. The International Whaling Commission panel described the animal as “severely compromised,” unlikely to survive even if moved to deeper water. The Whale and Dolphin Conservation group highlighted the whale’s skin damage from low salinity and stressed the need for it to recover fully and feed independently.

Marine biologist Fabian Ritter acknowledged the whale’s strong will to live but warned that such a rescue is unprecedented, making the outcome unpredictable. The German Oceanographic Museum also expressed concerns about the whale’s weakness and risk of drowning.
