Amazon is rolling out a major software update for its Kindle Colorsoft and Kindle Scribe Colorsoft devices, bringing system-wide dark mode to their color E Ink screens. Previously limited to inverting ebook pages, this new feature allows users to toggle dark mode across the entire user interface, including the homescreen and ebook library.

Alongside dark mode, the update introduces Smart Shapes to the Scribe Colorsoft’s notebooks, enabling users to add precise geometric shapes to their handwritten notes and sketches. This combination of visual comfort and enhanced productivity tools marks a significant upgrade for Kindle Colorsoft users.

System-Wide Dark Mode Expands to Color E Ink Kindles

While traditional black-and-white Kindle devices have long supported dark mode, Amazon’s color E Ink Kindles are now catching up. The new update allows users to apply dark mode across all UI sections, not just ebook pages. This means the homescreen, library, and reading interfaces can all switch to a darker theme, reducing eye strain and improving battery efficiency.

Users can customize which parts of the interface use dark mode, mixing and matching light and dark themes to suit their preferences. For example, the Scribe Colorsoft’s notebooks can remain in light mode while other areas switch to dark mode.

Smart Shapes Bring Precision to Handwritten Notes

The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft’s notebooks are also receiving a productivity boost with the addition of Smart Shapes. This feature lets users insert predefined shapes such as lines, arrows, circles, triangles, and rectangles directly from the toolbar.

For those who prefer freehand drawing, a new hold-to-snap function automatically converts rough sketches into neat, precise shapes, helping keep notes organized and visually appealing.
