Nicolai Tangen, CEO of Norges Bank Investment Management (NBIM), which oversees Norway’s $2.2 trillion sovereign wealth fund, shared insights on the complexities of investing during the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict. Speaking at NBIM’s annual investment conference, Tangen emphasized the difficulty of picking individual stocks in today’s volatile environment and expressed preference for broad market exposure through index funds.

With global markets showing resilience despite recent geopolitical shocks, Tangen highlighted the deflationary impact of AI and technology but cautioned about the uncertain outlook. He also revealed how NBIM is leveraging AI to boost productivity while maintaining human oversight in investment decisions.

Navigating Uncertainty Amid the U.S.-Iran Conflict

Following the outbreak of the U.S.-Iran war in late February, global stock markets experienced significant volatility but have since rebounded. Despite this recovery, Tangen described the current market as challenging to navigate, especially given the unpredictable geopolitical and macroeconomic landscape.

He stressed that NBIM’s strategy of managing a near-index fund is well-suited for this environment, allowing the fund to participate in both market upturns and downturns without the risks of individual stock picking.

A Massive Global Investor with a Long-Term Vision

NBIM, managing Norway’s sovereign wealth fund valued at approximately $2.2 trillion, holds stakes in around 7,200 companies across 60 countries. The fund owns about 1.5% of the world’s publicly listed stocks, making it one of the largest individual investors globally.

The fund invests exclusively in overseas assets to prevent overheating Norway’s economy and follows a benchmark index set by the Norwegian Ministry of Finance. Tangen acknowledged that while the fund benefits from a clear government mandate, it remains vulnerable to market corrections.

"We are an index-near fund, and that means that you participate in the upturns and you participate in the downturns, and that's the way you have to be positioned as a long-term investor."Nicolai Tangen, CEO, NBIM

Impact of Geopolitics and Energy Markets

The ongoing conflict has disrupted oil supplies, especially with the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, leading to increased demand for Norway’s petroleum exports. Official data shows a 12% rise in Norway’s crude oil exports in the year leading to March.

Tangen warned that the conflict’s ripple effects are already impacting energy markets and Asia, with expectations that these consequences will spread to Europe and the U.S., potentially driving higher prices.

Harnessing AI Without Losing the Human Touch

NBIM has aggressively integrated artificial intelligence into its operations over the past three years, using tools like Anthropic’s Claude AI model to enhance investment screening and internalize trading activities, resulting in a 20% productivity boost.

Despite AI’s transformative role, Tangen emphasized that investment decisions always involve human judgment, with AI serving as a powerful support tool rather than an autonomous decision-maker.

"We always have a human in the loop, and so [AI] does not make autonomous decisions. I can't really see that happening here, though it may be the case in other companies."Nicolai Tangen, CEO, NBIM

Looking Ahead: Cautious Optimism in a Complex Market

While NBIM’s broad diversification and long-term investment horizon provide resilience, Tangen remains cautious about the uncertain outlook amid geopolitical tensions and market fluctuations. The fund’s strategy to stay close to the index reflects a pragmatic approach to balancing risk and opportunity in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
