Apple Hikes Mac Mini Starting Price Amid SoC Shortages and AI Demand Surge
Mac mini entry-level model discontinued as Apple grapples with chip supply and soaring AI-driven sales

Apple has raised the starting price of its Mac mini desktop from $599 to $799 by eliminating the entry-level configuration. This change comes as the company faces inventory shortages caused by high demand for artificial intelligence applications and limited supply of advanced processors.
The move highlights how Apple is adjusting its product lineup in response to supply chain constraints and shifting consumer preferences, especially as Mac minis and Mac Studios become popular platforms for running AI and agentic tools.

Why the Mac Mini Price Jump?
Apple’s decision to remove the $599 Mac mini model, which featured an M4 chip and 256GB storage, effectively raises the base price to $799. The new entry-level Mac mini now comes with the same M4 processor but doubles the storage to 512GB. The higher-end M4 Pro model remains priced at $1,399.
This change follows widespread sellouts of the $599 tier and ongoing supply delays, with many configurations taking weeks or months to ship from Apple’s online store.

Supply Chain Challenges: The SoC Bottleneck
Apple CEO Tim Cook attributed the shortages primarily to limited availability of the advanced nodes used to manufacture the system on a chip (SoC) that powers the Mac mini. These cutting-edge chips are in high demand, creating a bottleneck in production.
Cook also noted that the surge in AI-related use cases has driven unexpectedly high demand for Mac minis and Mac Studios, which are well-suited for running large language models and other AI workloads locally.
“These are amazing platforms for AI and agentic tools, and the customer recognition of that is happening faster than what we had predicted, and so we saw higher than expected demand.”—Tim Cook, Apple CEO

What This Means for Consumers and Apple’s Future
Cook warned that it may take several months before supply and demand for the Mac mini and Mac Studio reach equilibrium. Meanwhile, Apple is planning to start producing some Mac mini models in Houston later this year, signaling a strategic shift away from Asian manufacturing hubs.
Additionally, Apple is preparing updated Mac Studio models for release by the end of the year, aiming to meet the growing appetite for powerful AI-capable machines.
- Mac mini entry-level model discontinued, starting price now $799
- Supply constraints linked to advanced SoC chip production
- AI demand driving higher-than-expected sales of Mac mini and Mac Studio
- Production to expand to Houston, reducing reliance on Asia
- Updated Mac Studio models expected by year-end

Broader Industry Trends: Rising Prices Amid Supply Strains
Apple’s price increase follows a trend seen across the tech industry, with other companies like Meta Platforms also raising device prices. Earlier this year, Apple had already increased starting prices for several MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models.
These adjustments reflect ongoing supply chain challenges and the premium placed on hardware capable of supporting AI workloads, which are becoming central to consumer and professional computing needs.
